Ditch the Disposables

Are you like me and consume coffee regularly? It's a common practice for most of us out there. Coffee is delicious and the only thing that gets some people moving in the morning. But all of those cups used for coffee go somewhere beyond the bottom of that trash can it was thrown in. The average American office worker will use about 500 disposable cups per year. Together, Americans throw out enough paper, plastic cups, forks, and spoons each year to go around the Earth's equator 300 times. Yes, you read that correctly.

"Polystyrene foam is widely used because it's lightweight, easy to ship and works well with both hot and cold food and beverages. Made from plastic #6, polystyrene foam is comprised of 97 percent air. It is easily carried by wind and water currents to all reaches of our planet, and its unsinkable nature makes it a main component of marine debris." -Earth911

Want to make a difference?
  • Say no to plastic wear. When ordering to-go, ask them to keep the plastic wear. You're going to bring it home anyway, might as well use your sturdy, trusty silverware!
  • Bring your own cup on your next visit to the coffee shop. Reusing reduces the number of pollutants released into the environment. On top of that, it's way cooler to have your own fancy mug. This ceramic mug is super trendy and unique. Sure to turn heads. That one not manly enough for you? How about this one?
Any step is a good step, but using a ceramic mug with a silicone lid and sleeve is better for the environment than a standard plastic travel mug. Even though they're not biodegradable, neither ceramic or silicone release harmful pollutants if left to the Earth like standard plastic does. Silicone can be used much longer than a similar piece of plastic, making it significantly more reusable. Also, silicone can be recycled after its long, durable life. Still want something biodegradable? This one is made of bamboo plastic which is 100% biodegradable. Although, the lid and sleeve are still made of recyclable silicone.
